Paradox Explores The Wild Console Frontier With Lead And Gold

Posted on December 08 2009 at 12:18 PM

Traditionally a PC game publisher, Paradox Interactive dons a cowboy hat and a pair of six-guns, moseying onto the console scene with Fatshark's Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West, and we've got pictures to prove it.

Lead and Gold first popped up in October, when developer Fatshark chummed the publishing waters with a video of the game in action. Europa Universalis developer Paradox Interactive took the bait, with the game's Q1 2010 release marking the company's debut on consoles, downloadable or otherwise.

"We've said all along that for the right title, we'd jump on the opportunity of going console and when Lead and Gold crossed our path, there was no turning back. The team over at Fatshark is very experienced and has done an excellent job," said Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive. "There's ample opportunity to roll this out on several different platforms, including PC."

Every passing moment we get closer and closer to the day when we'll be saying, "Oh great, another cowboy game." I can almost taste it!

Modern Warfare 2 Patch in Certification, Fixes Various Exploits

Posted on December 08 2009 at 01:47 AM

Some of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's cheating issues will be addressed soon, as we've found that the 1.06 patch is in the hands of certification to be released. Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling tweeted PS3 patch notes, along with word that it's with Microsoft certification now (via Joystiq). We can only assume this means the patch has also been sent to Sony, or will be in the very near future.

The update will remove the javelin glitch, which allowed players to turn themselves into powerful, fast-moving weapons. The patch will also fix exploits that allowed for infinite care packages, and areas where players could hide inside pieces of geography. Check out the video above for a look at the javelin glitch in action, and shed a tear for the cheap tactic that will soon be nothing but a memory. Here's to you, cheaters.

Assassin's Creed 2 includes an 'incredible revelation'

Posted on November 13 2009 at 12:52 AM

No joke, this is the sixth Assassin's Creed 2 developers diary. Why the hell does Ubisoft need so many? Well, the game is apparently huge.

In this latest video spot, the game's development team talks about the Animus, and what it says will be an "incredible revelation" uncovered in the sequel.

"We are really going to take you on a journey," says one of the game's scripwriters, Jeffrey Yohalem.

Better than that would have been the revelation that Journey was providing the soundtrack, but I'll take a big game that (I hope) improves on the original in every aspect. We'll see next week when Assassin's Creed 2 hits shelves... if we're all not playing Left 4 Dead 2 instead.

We'll see.

Dante's Inferno Heresy Level Looks Hot

Posted on November 10 2009 at 10:36 PM

The sixth circle of Dante Alighieri's version of Hell, also the sixth level of EA's Dante's Inferno does not sound like a nice place. A bit balmy, what will all the hellfire and such.

Of the levels we've seen thus far in Visceral Games' journey to hell, Heresy looks the most Hell-ish. Like, how I envision Hell, all flames and tortured screams and not so much demonic babies spawning from putrefied nipples.

This new trailer for Dante's Inferno does, however, have some demonic babies and, logically, demonic baby killing. And the game's developers explain just what this whole Dante's Inferno thing is all about.

If you were holding out hope that the oft-delayed StarCraft II beta won't be happening this year. Anxious fans will have to wait until 2010 to get their hands on the long-awaited sequel.

The news came during the Russian event IgroMir (via StarCraft Legacy), where producer Chris Sigaty confirmed that the beta would be arriving next year. He also confirmed that StarCraft II is still on track for a Q2 2010 release date.

StarCraft II was originally slated to arrive this year, but a delay became likely when the beta failed to materialize. The delay was confirmed earliest this year, with a firm release date still unavailable.

Assasins Creed 2

Posted on October 22 2009 at 09:58 PM

It's amazing what a young Italian nobleman can learn over the course of Assassin's Creed 2's 30-year time frame.

The latest in a series of developer diary videos starring Ubisoft's Patrice and friends looks into progression, one of the most important aspects of AC2. There's a lot more choice is character progression than there was in the first game, allowing you to tailor your Ezio to your liking. And speaking of tailoring, I love the additional armor sets, and I suspect cosplayers will love them too. There's only so much you can do with the all-white cloak ensemble.

Dirt 2 features directX 11 improvements.

Posted on October 22 2009 at 08:22 PM

Codemasters trotted out the PC version of Colin McRae: DiRT 2 today at the Windows 7 launch in New York, showing off the snazzy DirectX 11 features the game was delayed for.

The DirectX 11 effects actually look rather impressive, though I'm not sure they amount to anything that really warranted the game being delayed on the PC. I guess that's what comes of forming a strategic alliance with Microsoft to gain early access to the DirectX 11 tech.

"The opportunity to enter into a strategic relationship with Microsoft to fuse key DirectX 11 technologies with Codemasters' EGOTM Engine and set the new standard in race gaming on home computers was irresistible," said Bryan Marshall, chief technical officer, Codemasters. "By taking advantage of the DirectX 11 feature set included in Windows 7, including hardware tessellation, multi-threading and Shader Model 5.0, we will deliver the most immersive and realistic off-road racing experience yet and set the technical benchmark in the genre."

Really, they're the kind of effects you only notice if you are watching someone else race. Pretty, but ultimately unnecessary
