Julian Casablancas The Tonight Show

Posted on October 28 2009 at 12:36 PM

Strokes leader Julian Casablancas made his solo network TV bow last night on "The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien", performing new single "11th Dimension", a twisty new-wave song that recently earned him a Best New Track distinction on this very website. The track is from his album Phrazes for the Young, which comes out next week.

After a shaky start, Casablancas and his new band found their way into things-- though considering some of his impromptu, shifty dance moves, Jules might want to bring his mic stand back.

It's all after the jump:

Sounds like a publishing deal is in place. All that remains is the official announcement.

Jarvis Cocker: 'Pulp could reunite for Glastonbury 2010'

Posted on October 26 2009 at 06:31 PM

Jarvis Cocker has said that Pulp are "coming back" - and that they are interested in playing Glastonbury 2010.

The singer told The People that the Sheffield band, who have been inactive since the release of 2001 album 'We Love Life', have already talked about the possibility of playing the Worthy Farm event together.

"Glastonbury means an awful lot to me, I would love to play there again," he said. "We've talked about it, there we go, there'll be a band reunion."

Pulp headlined the Pyramid Stage at the event in both 1995 and 1998.

Cocker, who has released two solo albums since Pulp disbanded, is set to bring his solo show to the London Village Underground venue in November. He will play in front of free aerobics classes.

Julian Casablancas - 'Phrazes For The Young'

Posted on October 26 2009 at 05:36 PM

"Somewhere along the way, my hopefulness turned to sadness/ Somewhere along the way, my sadness turned to bitterness..."
Suffice to say, the first two lines that slur out of the speakers after pressing 'play' on 'Phrazes For The Young' will be instant red flags to any Strokes fan combing Julian Casablancas' solo debut for portents of doom. As the verse progresses, his bitterness then leads to anger, his anger inextricably to vengeance and his vengeance - oddly enough - to an unabashedly euphoric, Paul Simon-esque mardi-gras gallop of a chorus that, like a lot of things about this album, you'll never see coming.

After four troubling years of collective inactivity, individual Strokes have all of a sudden been going rogue left, right and centre: Fab Moretti and Nikolai Fraiture are both off working on their respective side-projects Little Joy and Nickel Eye, while Albert Hammond, Jr.'s solo albums have found him a niche as a sort of lo-fi Albert Hammond Sr.

Casablancas, on the other hand, seemed content to lay low, occasionally lending vocals to one-off collaborations with and Danger Mouse, and offering frustratingly ambiguous Strokes album updates such as, "We're pretty much ready to go, but at the same time we don't want to rush anything." And then, somewhere along the way, 'Phrazes For The Young' was born, complicating matters further still.

Recorded under the radar with producer Jason Lader and Bright Eyes collaborator Mike Mogis, it's a strange little album, just eight songs long but deceptively dense with ideas. Certain parts of it are unmistakably the work of the man who wrote 'Is This It', certain others you'd swear were anything but, and one part in particular - the inspired 'Ludlow St' - is a bawdy, boozy waltz through the Lower East Side locale that's quite simply stark raving. ?

After aforementioned opener 'Out Of The Blue' establishes that all bets are off with a joyous shrug of the shoulders and Casablancas' cathartic proclamation that "Yes, I know I'm going to hell in a leather jacket/But at least I'll be in another world while you're pissing on my casket", things take a darker turn on 'River Of Brake Lights'. Sharing the ominous, industrial vibe of 'Reptilia', its latticed web of interweaving guitars mark it out as the most obviously Strokesy song on here, though it still takes a few listens to draw you in.?

These are the songs Casablancas apparently felt wouldn't work for The Strokes, although on '4 Chords Of The Apocalypse' he does seem to take the smoky, '60s-soul aesthetic he briefly explored on 2003's 'Under Control' and runs with it, piling on drama and bombastic production where before there would have been rough-hewn garage-rock minimalism.
The halogenic synth-pop swagger he employs on '11th Dimension' and 'Left And Right In The Dark', meanwhile, sugar-coats some interesting lyrical themes. The former's pragmatic, post-Obama take on America ("Where cities come to hate each other in the name of sport" and "Your faith has got to be greater than your fear") in particular feels cheekily subversive, but best by far is 'Ludlow St'. Not only does it take the Native American history of New York and turn it into a metaphor for the area's yuppie invasion, it's delivered
in the form of a drunken country and western croon. And as a love song to the Lower East Side, it even manages to be quite touching.

Events do feel rather abruptly curtailed by the fade of 'Tourist''s minor-key march, and you're left wishing that Casablancas had a few more of these square-peg songs lying around. In fact you feel - perhaps appropriately for an album announced by a teaser trailer - a bit cliff-hung. Our appetite is whetted. Let's have part two quickly, please.

Wolfmother - 'Cosmic Egg' (Modular)

Posted on October 26 2009 at 05:01 PM

From Faith No More to collaborations with a weird and wonderful cast on a baffling range of musical projects, has been responsible for much that is righteous. But arguably topping all of these is the YouTube clip where, backstage at a music festival, the cod-Zeppelin shredding of Australian mock-rockers Wolfmother trickles into his ears like effluent into once-virgin water. "Are you hearing this shit?" Patton thunders, a look of horror upon his face. "What year are we in? Wolfmother: you suck!"

In 2008 Wolfmother split, to much rejoicing from sane persons the world over. Then singer Andrew Stockdale announced he'd be continuing with the moniker to record a new LP. But could Wolfmother Mk II be a different beast, returning with a sound far removed from the canonical pilfering that was their eponymous debut? Perhaps the reason for the band's implosion was disagreements about Stockdale's intended industrial direction?

Course it bloody wasn't. It's all in the name, of course. Who names their album after a yoga position? I mean, really. And then there are the lyrics, tedious, bong-addled piffle about
the "kingdom of the sun" and so on.

The music? Well it's harder and faster than their debut, that's for sure, owing more to Black Sabbath than the pastiche of Page and Plant that still remains in the likes of 'In The Morning'. But 'Cosmic Egg' remains nested in a time long ago, with the only 'progress' coming in 'Far Away', which sounds like it was expelled by Axl Rose during an enema in early sessions for 'Chinese Democracy'.

You could argue Wolfmother's ballsy and carefree hi-octane music is all just innocent fun, ideally washed down with a six pack of tinnies. Yet it's utterly devoid of soul and intelligence. Even basic craft is at a premium. All too often, this kind of luddite rock'n'roll is excused by the proficiency of the players. Who cares if they haven't an original idea between them if fingers blur on fretboards, tubs are thumped hard, and the singer can raise a bat-perplexing wail? But there's no excuse for such mindless effrontery.

Are you still with us, General Patton? Let all those who believe with zealous hearts in the importance of forging something new and fearsome in fire and molten steel join forces, and blast this execrable troupe back to the Stone Age from whence they came.

Cymbals Eat Guitars - 'Why There Are Mountains'

Posted on October 26 2009 at 04:57 PM

The lead singer of this Staten Island quartet used to go by the name of Joe Ferocious. He told NME earlier this year that, although his name originates from when he was in high school, he "wasn't really that ferocious". Although Joe has now reverted to the boring D'Agostino, the feral noise-pop his band creates is as vicious as ever. '...And The Hazy Sea' heads the album with a claustrophobic freak-out of crashing cymbals, dying guitars and maddening screams. It pummels our brain into the Pavement-y distorted indie (best: 'Indiana') and lo-fi orchestrated wail-outs (best: 'Like Blood Does') that make up the rest of the album. 'Why There Are Mountains' is delightfully savage.

Lightning Bolt - 'Earthly Delights' (Load)

Posted on October 26 2009 at 04:53 PM

For the uninitiated the mighty Bolt are art students from Providence, Rhode Island. Brian Gibson plays bass and Brian Chippendale plays drums, often with a mask made out of a pillowcase on his head and a mic in his mouth so he can 'sing'. Together they make a sound not unlike an angry volcano god jizzing hot magma into your ears. Live they are kings of the guerrilla gig, playing at intense volumes in the middle of their crowd, often causing pandemonium. On record some of this context is lost, but the band make up for it by plumping for overdriven, live-in-the-studio performances. Out of the lo-fi punk/hardcore/black metal bedrock clatter of sound they create, lysergic and buzzing riffs clarify gloriously before melting back into chaos.

Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da Review

Posted on October 26 2009 at 04:44 PM

Liebe Ist Für Alle DaSound: You have to hand it to Rammstein - the sextet has not lost its ability to shock and/or entertain after 15 years in the business. The German group known for its creepy-yet-somehow-sexy blend of industrial rock/synth pop has always proved themselves to be an awe-inspiring bunch, particularly when the intimidating Till Lindemann sets his limbs afire for the sake of a concert performance. Somehow Rammstein has found a way to keep the danger factor alive with the 6th studio album Liebe ist für alle da, all the while proving that its musical creativity has intensified as well. Four years in the making, the new record never becomes mired in the same sound. Yes, there are quite a few songs that might have a chorus or verse driven by power chords, but there are enough other interesting nuances that things rarely get dull. And then you have a song like the first single "Pussy," which...well...we shall get to shortly.

The opening track "Rammlied" is the epitome of an attention grabber, with its choral-driven intro (akin to what you might hear in a movie about soul possession) that quickly explodes into chants of - what else - "Rammstein!" The music that eventually follows does weave in more of the choral aspect, but the underlying arrangement has almost a Faith No More vibe to it. "Rammlied" draws you in, although that's not to say any other song on the CD mimics the opener. On the contrary, Rammstein is all over the place genre-wise, which is exactly what makes Liebe ist für alle da intriguing.

The focal point is undoubtedly vocalist Till Lindemann, who is still the epitome of German machismo. However, one of the most refreshing things about Lindemann is, regardless of the brute nature he may convey, he still is not afraid to take on a love song. "Frühling in Paris" is a gorgeous ballad featuring an impeccably smooth acoustic section and Lindemann delivering a sensitive, melodically pleasing vocal line. "Haifisch," although not a ballad by any means (it parallels more of an 80's synth pop style), is still a far cry from industrial and Lindemann handles it effectively.

Of course, the full-on manliness of Rammstein still reigns supreme. And if I'm being completely honest, my full preference lies in the moments when the distorted guitars (played by Richard Z Kruspe and Paul H. Landers) take over and Lindemann growls diabolically. The one track on the CD that will probably garner the most attention combines the trademark masculinity, humor, and a whole lot of sex. "Pussy," which is an absolute hoot of a listen (with a chorus sung in English), might also rank at the top of Rammstein's most controversial songs. The reason? Check out the music video if you dare. Wow. // 9

Lyrics and Singing: While we're on the topic of "Pussy," let's just put this on the table: It's the catchiest (and most twisted) track on Liebe ist für alle da. After random comments about a Mercedes Benz, the Autobahn, and Fahrvergnügen, Lindemann gets down to business by singing, "You've got a pussy; I have a dick; So, what's the problem? Let's do it quick." There are plenty of manly lyrics elsewhere, as in "Waidmanns Heil" (loosely translated "I have been in heat for a few days; So I will hunt a naked game; And until the morning I will sit there; So that I can give (it) a sharp shot"). This pretty much sums up why Rammstein has made such a name for itself. There's certain an in-your-face quality to the band's music and lyrics - love 'em or hate 'em - and on this record it makes for a wildly entertaining listen. // 9

Impression: Rammstein has managed to remain not only true to its history on Liebe ist für alle da, but it has shown growth in its song arrangements. Whether inserting a majestic Renaissance-like horn section at the intro of "Waidmanns Heil" or delivering a gritty, industrial sound in "B********" (aka "Bückstabü" or "Whatever You Want"), Rammstein is not afraid to stray from the traditional rock sound. This is a band that still likely won't click with those with delicate sensibilities, but that's what makes me like them all the more. // 10

Noel Gallegher Solo

Posted on October 25 2009 at 06:14 PM

Former Oasis guitarist/songwriter Noel Gallagher says he plans on pursuing a solo career following his split from the popular UK band this past summer. In an interview with the U.K.'s Daily Mirror Gallagher that he is looking forward to the opportunity.

"I'm having a good time, and the support from my fans has been great. I'm looking forward to doing my own thing, bringing out my own music. I'm glad that's what people want to hear. I am not thinking about much else, Oasis or Liam, I'm just having a good time."

A solo career was expected to be announced by the elder Gallagher brother, who did most of the song writing in Oasis.

Back in August, word broke that Gallagher was leaving the band when he posted a statement on the official Oasis website saying, "I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer."

Liam Gallagher, said publicly that the group has officially split, but the remaining members will continue to create new music in Noel's absence. In addition, it has been rumored that Liam will be working with Jay-Z on a future project.

Morrissey Collapses On Stage

Posted on October 25 2009 at 05:37 PM

Pop singer Morrissey is in stable condition following an on-stage collapse at a concert in Swindon, England.

The 50-year-old was taken to hospital after falling to the stage floor just minutes into his performance at the Oasis Leisure Centre, shortly after finishing his opening song, the Smiths classic 'This Charming Man.'

The singer, real name Stephen Patrick Morrissey, has already cancelled a number of dates this year in Australia and the US due to "unspecified illness," however his collapse still came as a shock to fans.

A spokesman for the Great Western hospital said: "Morrissey is being reviewed by the medical staff and his condition is stable."

The status of future scheduled gigs in unclear.

Julian Casablancas to Release Box Set Edition of Solo Album

Posted on October 23 2009 at 10:19 PM

Julian Casablancas to Release Box Set Edition of Solo AlbumWe're less than two weeks away from Phrazes for the Young, the first solo album from Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas. (It's due due November 2 in the UK via Rough Trade and November 3 in the U.S. via Cult/RCA.) But if you're willing to wait a little longer and drop $89.95, you can get yourself a whole lot more Julian, since he's also releasing a deluxe box set edition of the album.

The box, pictured above, includes a whole lot of stuff: the album on CD and 180-gram vinyl, a 48-page book autographed by Julian, a DVD with solo acoustic performances, a second CD with demo versions and B-sides, a double-sided poster, and a Cult Records pin. It'll all come in a fancy antique-styled box. Though the box set isn't out until December 18, you'll also get an immediate download of the album on the album's release date.
In other Casablancas news, he recently gave an interview to The Sun in which he talked about the progress of the fourth Strokes album. (Via the Quietus) Casablancas said, "There is a disagreement as to whether the songs are ready. Some of the band think they are and others don't. I'm somewhere in the middle.

He added, "The problem is getting us together. We're scattered everywhere, and apart from when we're rehearsing we don't see each other. We're not like people who go to the movies together. It's weird with the band. A band is actually a great way to ruin a friendship."

Well, that's not very encouraging! Those of you holding your breaths waiting for another Strokes album are probably already long dead. But if you're still alive, you should go ahead and breathe; it looks like it'll be a while.

Jarvis Cocker to Host BBC Radio Show

Posted on October 23 2009 at 10:14 PM

Adding to an impressive resume that already includes "frontman for one of the greatest Britpop bands of all time," "solo artist," "Arctic explorer," "political analyst," and "film music composer," Jarvis Cocker is taking on another role: radio show host.

The Quietus reports that Cocker is set to host the 3:30-5:30pm Sunday afternoon slot on BBC 6 Music, starting January 10, 2010.

Talking to the BBC, Cocker said, "Sunday doesn't feel that different to the other days of the week anymore. Although there was something weird about when everything seemed to stop on a Sunday, it kind of marked out the week. I am going to put the boringness back into Sunday. That's my mission."

He added, "I'm very much looking forward to it. I think Sunday afternoon's have got a special atmosphere, and I will be doing something that I think is appropriate to that - or maybe inappropriate, I don't know!...It's a great honour to be working for the BBC, which I consider to be the greatest broadcaster in the world. It is my intention to fill these hours with as much dodgy opinion, crackpot theories, hare-brained schemes&beautiful, beautiful music as is humanly possible. I can't wait to get going."

This isn't the first time Cocker has taken over the BBC airwaves, however. He served as a guest editor of Radio 4's "Today" in December 2008.

And in a repeat of what went down at a gallery in Paris in May, Cocker and his band plan to set up shop at the Village Underground in London from November 9 to November 11. They'll jam with audience members and special guests, provide soundtracks for exercise classes, and play a show on the last night of the residency. The whole thing will be webcast on Jarvis' website.

Legal Action Against Sublime Reunion

Posted on October 23 2009 at 09:50 PM

Photo: Eichner/WireImage

In late February, the surviving members of Sublime (bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh) performed at a Mexican restaurant in Nevada with a new vocalist named Rome stepping in for late singer-guitarist Brad Nowell, who died of a heroin overdose over a decade ago. The trio recently announced they will perform their first concert as "Sublime" since May 24th, 1996 - the day before Nowell passed away - tomorrow at Devore, California's Smokeout Festival. Wilson and Gaugh have said they're reluctant to call the show a "reunion," preferring to call it a "celebration." Bradley Nowell's estate thinks the event be classified by another name: violation.

In a statement released today, Nowell's family says Brad registered "Sublime" as a trademark under his own name prior to his death, and never intended for any band to use the moniker without him. "Out of respect for Brad's wishes, we have always refused to endorse any group performing as 'Sublime,' and now with great reluctance feel compelled to take the appropriate legal action to protect Brad's legacy," the Nowell family writes.

UPDATE: The remaining members of Sublime have responded to the Nowell family in a pair of statements that defend the band's decision to perform under the Sublime name. The band adds that a United States District Court allowed the trio to perform as Sublime after a temporary restraining order from the Nowell family was unsuccessful.

Read all three full statements after the jump.

Nowell family statement:

"It was recently announced that Sublime bassist Eric Wilson and Sublime drummer Floyd 'Bud' Gaugh are 'reuniting' and teaming with singer and guitarist Rome Ramirez in a band they intend to call 'Sublime.' Prior to his untimely passing, both Bud and Eric acknowledged that Brad Nowell was the sole owner of the name Sublime. It was Brad's expressed intention that no one use the name Sublime in any group that did not include him, and Brad even registered the trademark 'Sublime' under his own name.

As Brad's heirs, and with the support of his entire family, we only want to respect his wishes and therefore have not consented to Bud and Eric calling their new project 'Sublime.' We have always supported Bud and Eric's musical endeavors and their desire to continue to play Sublime's music. We wholeheartedly supported Bud, Eric and the many talented members of the Sublime posse that formed the Long Beach Dub All-Stars, soon after Brad's death, to honor him through their original recordings, live performances and Sublime music until they disbanded in 2001. But, out of respect for Brad's wishes, we have always refused to endorse any group performing as 'Sublime,' and now with great reluctance feel compelled to take the appropriate legal action to protect Brad's legacy.

Our hope is that Brad's ex-bandmates will respect his wishes and find a new name to perform under, so as to enhance the 'Sublime' legacy without the confusion and disappointment that many fans have expressed upon seeing the announcement.

Peace and Love to all,
Troy, Jakob&Jim 'Papa' Nowell."

Gaugh and Wilson statements:

"On behalf of the band Sublime, founding members Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson are thrilled by the opportunity to reconnect with their fans around the world. While we all mourn the passing of our brother and bandmate Bradley Nowell some thirteen years ago, Sublime still has a strong message of hope and love to share - a message that is especially important in these difficult times.

Brad's heirs apparently do not share this vision and do not want the band Sublime to continue and tried - unsuccessfully - to file a temporary restraining order to prevent the band from carrying on. Despite those objections, we are pleased that the United States District Court has allowed us to perform as Sublime for all of our fans.

We urge everyone to join us in our message of peace and love, and we look forward to sharing the music we created - the music that defines us.

- Sublime"

"It's unfortunate that The Estate would take a position against us. Eric, Brad and I started this band when we were kids. We were the ones that spent years paying dues playing hole-in-the-wall clubs. We were the ones lugging around our gear in a broken down van. We were the ones that spent years writing, recording and rehearsing. WE. Not anyone else. Sublime is a band - our band.

Eric, Brad and I always agreed that no one should ever be allowed to tell artists what they can and cannot do with their art. It's a matter of artistic integrity.

We were devastated when we lost Brad and there's not a day that goes by that Eric and I don't think about him and miss him. When we got together and started jamming with Rome, we realized that embracing the music will be a huge step toward healing and moving forward. We see this as a celebration of Brad's memory and the music we all made together. And the fans are on board - they've started a Facebook page called "We Want Sublime" and its numbers are growing daily. Sublime's music has always been about love and we hope The Estate joins us and the fans that support us in celebrating Brad's life and our music.

Come celebrate with us.

Much love,
Bud Gaugh"

Listen to R.E.M.'s Live at the Olympia Album

Posted on October 23 2009 at 09:42 PM

REM Live

From June 30 to July 5, 2007, R.E.M. played a series of shows in Dublin's Olympia Theater, which was then intended as a test-run for new material that would appear on their 2008 release, Accelerate, according to NPR.

These performances now make up the 39 tracks of the band's forthcoming Live at the Olympia, a collection of rather unlikely and underplayed R.E.M. songs written in their early Athens, Ga. years. The live release comes out next Tuesday, Oct. 27.

But thanks to NPR, you can listen to the whole album now, right here.

Them Crooked Vultures’ Self-Titled Album Out November 17th

Posted on October 22 2009 at 10:00 PM

The burning question that's lingered since Them Crooked Vultures made their live debut August 9th at Chicago's Metro has finally been answered: Rock's newest supergroup announced today that they'll released their self-produced and self-titled album on November 17th, a week and three months after the band of Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme, Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones first appeared onstage together.

Assasins Creed 2

Posted on October 22 2009 at 09:58 PM

It's amazing what a young Italian nobleman can learn over the course of Assassin's Creed 2's 30-year time frame.

The latest in a series of developer diary videos starring Ubisoft's Patrice and friends looks into progression, one of the most important aspects of AC2. There's a lot more choice is character progression than there was in the first game, allowing you to tailor your Ezio to your liking. And speaking of tailoring, I love the additional armor sets, and I suspect cosplayers will love them too. There's only so much you can do with the all-white cloak ensemble.

Trent Reznor Lends Voice, Music to "Fringe" Television Promo

Posted on October 22 2009 at 08:35 PM

Trent Reznor Lends Voice, Music to "Fringe" Television Promo

When Trent Reznor was wrapping up the Nine Inch Nails farewell tour, he promised over and over that he wasn't done making music. A little over a month later, the first piece of post-"Wave Goodbye" Reznor music is out there, though it doesn't take the form most people might expect.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Reznor has revamped the Year Zero track "Zero-Sum" specifically for J.J. Abrams' eminently goofy paranormal TV drama "Fringe". The new version was done for a promotional trailer, which you can watch below.

According to EW, the "Fringe" people had worked up a promo spot set to the original version of "Zero-Sum", but Reznor himself decided to participate after his friend Abrams asked him to collaborate. So, in his inimitable demon-whisper, Reznor recited some lines of dialogue that Leonard Nimoy's character has spoken on the show. While he was on tour, Reznor also reworked the track. And according to EW, if you look at the track's sound waves digitally, you'll see one of the show's "glyphs." Yes, Trent Reznor is apparently that much of a nerd.

"Fringe" executive producer Jeff Pinkner told EW that Reznor actually turned down any payment for his services. Pinkner also claimed that Reznor has a standing invite to appear on the show. He said, "Well, his head would probably end up exploding. There'd be some uncomfortable biology in there one way or another." How could Trent turn down something like that?

The promo is set to debut on TV during tonight's American League Championship Series game, where hopefully it will work some sort of supernatural hex on the Yankees.

This marks the biggest collaboration between a vaguely transgressive 90s alt-rock star and a Fox sci-fi show since Shirley Manson played a killer robot on "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles".

Dirt 2 features directX 11 improvements.

Posted on October 22 2009 at 08:22 PM

Codemasters trotted out the PC version of Colin McRae: DiRT 2 today at the Windows 7 launch in New York, showing off the snazzy DirectX 11 features the game was delayed for.

The DirectX 11 effects actually look rather impressive, though I'm not sure they amount to anything that really warranted the game being delayed on the PC. I guess that's what comes of forming a strategic alliance with Microsoft to gain early access to the DirectX 11 tech.

"The opportunity to enter into a strategic relationship with Microsoft to fuse key DirectX 11 technologies with Codemasters' EGOTM Engine and set the new standard in race gaming on home computers was irresistible," said Bryan Marshall, chief technical officer, Codemasters. "By taking advantage of the DirectX 11 feature set included in Windows 7, including hardware tessellation, multi-threading and Shader Model 5.0, we will deliver the most immersive and realistic off-road racing experience yet and set the technical benchmark in the genre."

Really, they're the kind of effects you only notice if you are watching someone else race. Pretty, but ultimately unnecessary

Musicians supporting Obama's Guantanamo Bay shut down plan

Posted on October 22 2009 at 08:15 PM

REM, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine and Billy Bragg have pledged to support US President Barack Obama's campaign to shut down Guantanamo Bay prison.

They join Jackson Browne, Steve Earle, Roseanne Cash and Bonnie Raitt in signing up for a coalition of musicians who are calling for the jail to be closed, reports reports BBC News.

Many of the artists have backed the campaign because they're angry their music was used as an interrogation tool.

REM said in a statement: "We have spent the past 30 years supporting causes related to peace and justice. To now learn that some of our friends' music may have been used as part of the torture tactics, without their consent or knowledge, is horrific. It's anti-American, period."

A report published by the Senate Armed Services Committee last year made several references to music being used for interrogation.

Records were played to to "stress" a prisoner, Mohamedou Ould Slahi, who was questioned while being "exposed to variable lighting patterns" and repeated plays of 'Let The Bodies Hit The Floor by Drowning Pool in 2003.

According to the National Security Archive, songs by AC/DC, Britney Spears, The Bee Gees and Marilyn Manson were also played at the prison.

Alex Turner Mugs in New Arctic Monkeys Video, "Cornerstone"

Posted on October 16 2009 at 02:18 PM

The whimsical and heartbreaking "Cornerstone" is without a doubt the best song on the Arctic Monkeys' recent Humbug LP, so the fact that it's being released as the record's next single is very good news. Even better: the song is coming out digitally and as a 10" record with three brand new b-sides. Internet release is set for November 17; vinyl comes on December 8 via Domino.

Best of all, perhaps, is the song's new video-- a charming one-taker featuring Monkeys singer Alex Turner hamming it up in vintage headphones in front of a white background. The Richard Ayoade-directed clip relies entirely on Turner's subtle star power, and the singer makes watching worthwhile. It's about a million times better than Humbug's first video, "Crying Lightning", and it probably cost significantly less, too. Ingenuity, people, ingenuity! Bravo.

Watch the video, view the single tracklist, and take note of Arctic Monkeys' upcoming tour dates-- including some new North American dates in December-- after the jump:

Flaming Lips to Cover Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon

Posted on October 16 2009 at 02:08 PM

According to an L.A. Times report, the Flaming Lips are set to follow-up their life- (and death)-affirming LP Embryonic with a full-album redo of Pink Floyd's gazillion-selling 1973 psych-rock classic Dark Side of the Moon.

The Lips version of Dark Side is a collaboration with the band Stardeath and White Dwarfs (which includes Wayne Coyne's nephew Dennis Coyne as a member), and features guest spots from Henry Rollins and Peaches. It will most probably be an iTunes-only release.

The announcement was made last night during a Q&A session with fans at a MySpace show last night at L.A.'s Nike/Ricardo Montalbรกn Theater.

Other tidbits revealed: While Embryonic was the final album of the Flaming Lips' current contract with Warner Bros., they plan on sticking with the label for future releases.

Also, the video for "Watching the Planets" features a nude Wayne Coyne (as well as a bunch of nude bikers). The internet's not ready.

Them Crooked Vultures Blast Through Jams at New York Debut

Posted on October 16 2009 at 01:59 PM

Photo: Ken Grand-Pierre
"It's a lot of new music," said Them Crooked Vultures frontman Josh Homme onstage at the Roseland Ballroom for the New York debut of his supergroup with Dave Grohl and John Paul Jones last night. "It's not often you get to hear a bunch of music that you have no idea what's gonna happen."

Debuting in public seems like a coup in the age of instant leaks and message board spoilers. And Them Crooked Vultures got nothing short of a hero's welcome for a show where the only material anyone knew was from spotty camera phone YouTubes and exactly 137 seconds of studio music floating around. They packed the enormous Roseland on name alone with tickets that went for $54.50; they sold tons of merch without a single leaked song to their name; they had a father and son team already running around in matching Them Crooked Vultures T-shirts.

Clearly the cult of personality loomed the largest. Homme, the only guy in the band who hasn't had a record sell 10 million copies, did his best to humanize the event and defuse the tension with his dry banter. "This is Mr. Dave Grohl on drums," he said to a rush of applause before quipping, "Oh, they've heard of you." Homme seemed genuinely shocked after he got cheers for "Nobody Loves Me, and Neither Do I," adding, "You know this one?" His intimate attitude was perfect because the band was playing it close, too. These weren't rock demigods out to mesmerize a crowd with their oversized personalities and monolithic jams; these were a couple guys fresh from the practice space, still ironing out the kinks, still looking at each other while they play to figure out where they're going. When they busted into a new set list addition, the alt-metal neck-snapper "Reptiles," Jones had to face Grohl to keep its tricky scissor-kick rhythms from falling apart.

Otherwise they were tight as a button, if not a little indulgent. Six-minute space-blooz dirges still seem a little odd in the hand of lean popsters like Homme and Grohl, but consummate Zepper Jones felt right at home - and the crowd completely ate up all his art-rock affectations. He playing a completely ripping, honest-to-God bass solo in the middle of "Scumbag Blues," his fingers running up and down the neck like a caffeinated 17-year-old who just learned how to play "Good Times, Bad Times." At the end of the scuzzy, Kiss-like rager "Daffodils," he played a two-minute barroom piano solo by himself, and the crowd went nuts. For the demented lounge of "Interlude w/ Ludes" he brought a keytar out from the side of the stage, which was maybe the first time a keytar has gotten applause at Roseland in 20 years.

Maybe even a little hyper-aware of all the jamming, Homme cut the tension once again by the show's end. "You still love us now? Only four hours left."

Johnny Marr Talks About the Cribs and Modest Mouse, Not About the Smiths

Posted on October 15 2009 at 05:45 PM

Johnny Marr came to prominence in the 80s playing guitar in a little band called the Smiths. When that little band broke up, he went on to work with the everybody from the Talking Heads and Pet Shop Boys to Beck and Oasis. He founded Electronic with Bernard Sumner and released a solo album with his band the Healers. More recently, he joined the Pacific Northwest indie powerhouse Modest Mouse.

The latest notch on Marr's resume came when he joined the brotherly Brit-punk band the Cribs, playing on their new album Ignore the Ignorant. This summer, we talked with Cribs bassist/vocalist Gary Jarman about what it's like to have a legend in the band. And earlier this week, we got Marr himself on the phone to talk about everything he's been up to lately.

A word of advice: don't ask him about the Smiths.

Pitchfork: You live in Portland, Oregon and Manchester, England right now. You have a knack for picking really rainy cities.

JM: I know. I don't know what the hell that's about. Well, I like places where there's a good creative atmosphere. I'm sure the rain has got something to do with it, although Americans make a really big deal about the rain in Portland. Compared to Manchester, it's like Hawaii.

Pitchfork: Do you think that everyone staying inside contributes to creativity?

JM: Yeah, it's got to have something to do with it. It's got to have some impact on people's minds. I know it did when I was growing up. I think humans need some color, sometimes technicolor. If you're not getting it from the outside world, you have to create it yourself. I think that's got something to do with it. I don't see that many great groups coming out of Bondi Beach these days.

Pitchfork: How does it feel to be a Crib?

JM: It feels just like the way I usually feel, except I'm playing some songs that I wrote last year and that are in my life now. That's what I'm playing to people, but I was pretty much always the same. That's probably why it works-- because I didn't really have to change one bit.

Pitchfork: What attracted you to this band?

JM: I heard them and was really knocked out by their song "Hey Scenesters!" I actually had one of those moments I've read about, where I heard the track in the car. I didn't actually need to pull over to the side of the road and get oxygen, but I was really knocked out by it. I immediately downloaded the rest of the album when I got home. And then I listened to that record for a while. For the longest time, when I was asked about what bands I like, it was the Cribs, and they got to hear about that.

I just fell in love with the music first, which I was really happy about. I hadn't read about them, and I didn't really know about their reputation. I just made some assumptions that were all positive, and they turned out to be true. I've been surprised, actually; since I've been playing with them, you go out and you sit in front of people with microphones and tape recorders or whatever. And there's this dimension that I heard in the band's music that kind of doesn't really get addressed. I'm having to deal with this reputation they've gotten. I found that to be quite reductive. The point is, I'm really glad that I came to the music first rather than the story first. The music tells a bigger story, I think.

Pitchfork: What do you think is the quality that doesn't get addressed?

JM: Their intelligence. They're smart people. I heard really smart people making smart music, and that was done with some deliberate idea in mind and somewhat of an agenda, if not manifesto. I was crossing my fingers when I first got into this band. Often these days, you hear a track, and it's a great track, but there's not really a lot else going on with the band. I like liking bands, so it was nice to be a fan for a while and to just discover this music. So that intelligence-- and good tunes, great riffs, and all of those things. To be able to kind of enhance it and take it somewhere is exciting.

Pitchfork: A couple of times now, you've come and just joined bands that already existed as established units. It's got to be a lot of fun, to join a band that you already know you like.

JM: Yeah. Well, I don't make assumptions that it's going to work. Modest Mouse and then the Cribs, you know, it's serious business. It's anything but party time, if you think about the principles and the people involved in those bands. It's all well and good being friends and having things in common, but you don't have to join a band to have them in your life. Joining it is a very different matter, and it's quite a serious undertaking. I've been making music as my living since I was 18, I've had that opportunity a few times, and I'm always really knocked out when I'm invited. That's the thing, you know-- I do get invited. People do have a say in it. Hopefully, we're not people that take ourselves so seriously, but we take what we do seriously. I take what I do seriously, and I respect the bands that I've joined. I have absolutely nothing but respect for them, quite rightly. So to make it work is serious business.

Pitchfork: All the other members of the Cribs are brothers. How does it feel to enter into a dynamic like that?

JM: Well, at first I thought it made no difference and there wasn't any significance in it. But in truth, there is. I've got to say, it's all pretty positive. Occasionally, I'm asked about being in a band with brothers, and there's an expectation that I'm going to possibly raise my eyebrows and roll my eyes, that it's like a boxing match going on. But these guys have all got a really great understanding and a good way of working together. It's not explosive or uptight or anything like that.

I think that with brothers, with maybe one or two exceptions, there's a refreshing lack of neurosis. Often-- and I'm not just talking about one particular group, I'm talking about almost every group-- there's a neurosis. They're quite paranoid. There seems to be not so much of that with the Cribs. Everybody keeps each other in check, and there is sort of an innate understanding between the three of them. That saves a lot of bullshit. I don't mind if things are good or bad as long as everybody understands what's going on in the dynamic of the band, and it just saves an awful lot of nonsense. There's just an assumption that everything's okay, and if it's not, then it just gets brought out into the open. It's very healthy, you know. And then it's just down to people's own tension with themselves to keep things from getting too easy. But that's all right, too.

Pitchfork: I picture them getting into big, long conversations about the cartoons they watched when they were younger or what their mom used to cook for dinner.

JM: Yeah, that does happen. But it's always like a great, fascinating story. Plus you've got the dynamic of Gary and Ryan being twins, so a lot of their experiences are shared. It's interesting; it's just another interesting experience for me. Because they're gentlemen and gracious guys, they've always done as much as possible to make me feel at home. The two families kind of merged, anyway. The band was living wherever I was for the first year-- except for Gary, because he lived in Portland. But Ryan and Ross were living with me in Portland, and then we all lived together in Manchester at my studio for quite a few months. The rest of the time, we've been on the tour bus together. I don't feel like an outsider unless I want to.

Pitchfork: Musically, they're a more straightforward bash-it-out band than any of the groups you've been in before. How do you feel like you've changed their sound?

JM: I can only really just say, with the way I play guitar and the way I think, some of the chord changes that I sometimes use. They're all really good musicians, though. If they were going to bash something out, that's a very deliberate kind of intention. Ryan's a really unusual guitar player, and I love playing with other guitar players. The sound of two electric guitars is great to me, and maybe because of that, Ryan is thinking like a two-headed beast with me on that. So maybe that has changed things somewhat, because it's giving Ryan someone to bounce off of a little bit. He's smart; he's managed to maintain a lot of his own thing while he's backing me up at the same time. He and I just do this thing where we work as a duo. Quite often in bands, the guy who wrote the song will just strum some chords, and the other guy will do the fiddly bits. We're not interested in that at all; we never do that. We're into it being a twin guitar attack, so I think that's one aspect where the band has maybe taken off on this album. The other thing is that I have some lyrics that I wrote for them. We all have lyrics that we write for songs; all four of us write songs together. None of us brings in a complete song because we know that the band is going to make it better. That's a really good position to be in.

Pitchfork: Are you still a member of Modest Mouse?

JM: Well, Modest Mouse are out on the road right now with my friend Jim Fairchild [All Smiles, ex-Grandaddy] standing in for me. So as of this moment, Jim Fairchild is occupying the place I was occupying. But there's no final fallout. There's just no finality about me and Modest Mouse. Isaac [Brock]'s approach has always been that the door is always open; he leaves the door open to create partners and to ensure that none of us wanted to get in the way of something good happening. We're all friends together, and something was happening, so we're all happy to make it happen. I played on the new Modest Mouse release and wrote some of that with the guys. And I see the guys and hang out with the guys and keep in touch with them. So that's kind of the way it is. We're all very grown-up about it and very supportive of each other.

Pitchfork: That's a really good position to be in.

JM: Yeah, that's right. It is really good. Because none of us is stupid.

Pitchfork: With the Cribs, do you think you'll be able to jump in and out of the fold the same way?

JM: It's not really come up. That's not really on the agenda. We're only just on tour with this record, so we're being a group, and I'm the guitar player in the group. So that's a little bit theoretical, really. Right now, I'm just out of soundcheck, about to play a show. Today, I'm the best guitar player-- and friend-- in this group that I can be. And tomorrow, I'm going to be exactly the same. Probably the day after that, too, I guess. That's the way I live my life, and that's what you see when we're on stage. So I kind of don't think about it, to be honest with you.

Pitchfork: You also played on the recent 7 Worlds Collide record. In the documentary about the recording of it, you looked like you were really enjoying yourself.

JM: Yeah, that was funny. I think that documentary got made to be very lighthearted, you know. In between fucking around, I did manage to play a lot of guitar and write a couple of songs. It doesn't tell the entire picture. But yeah, it was a fantastic feeling being there, and why sit around being po-faced all the time? There's a time to be serious, and sometimes you can have a really good time. But everybody there was really fucking cool. I always love hearing Lisa Germano sing vocals on songs and being around Sebastian Steinberg and Ed O'Brien, people like that. Getting to know the Wilco guys. It's just a fantastic time. Neil [Finn] is quite an amazing songwriter.

Pitchfork: You said in a recent interview that you and Morrissey aren't feuding, and that you email with each other. Is that true?

JM: I'm done talking about that shit. Who cares?

Nirvana To Release 'Live At Reading' on DVD

Posted on October 15 2009 at 05:19 PM

Ranked #1 in Kerrang Magazine's "100 Gigs That Shook The World" and voted as "Nirvana's #1 Greatest Moment" by fans in an NME poll, Nirvana's historic August 30, 1992 headlining appearance at the UK's Reading Festival is one of the most bootlegged concerts in the annals of rock n roll. Now, fans will have an opportunity to own a pristine copy of that entire performance -- color-corrected video from the original film with audio sourced from the original multi-track masters. Nirvana Live At Reading will be issued in a limited edition CD+DVD Deluxe Edition as well as DVD-only, CD-only configurations on November 3, 2009, followed by a 2LP version on November 17, 2009.

While the show's centerpiece was a performance of nearly the entire Nevermind tracklist, also noteworthy were early performances of three as yet unrecorded songs which wouldn't be released until 2 years later on In Utero: "All Apologies," "Dumb," and in its first ever public performance, "Tourettes." The career-spanning setlist also reached back to the band's 1989 Sub Pop debut album, Bleach, for "Blew," "About A Girl," "School," "Negative Creep" and first single "Love Buzz," and even further back to the mid-80s for "Spank Thru." Other songs from the Reading set would appear in studio form on the Incesticide compilation later in the year: "Aneurysm," "Been A Son" and "Sliver." Additionally, the band played a pair of beloved covers by two bands that helped shape the formative Nirvana sound "The Money Will Roll Right In" by Fang and "D-7" by The Wipers.

Only 2 of the 25 performances on the DVD have ever been released before. Watch "School" now, exclusively on Amazon.com.

Live-Action Mario Dead At 76 [Rest In Peace]

Posted on October 14 2009 at 02:21 PM

Wrestling manager Captain Lou, Cyndi Lauper's fake dad, and Mario in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Lou Albano passed away today at the age of 76.

Wrestling fans know him as the WWE Hall of Famer who managed more than 50 wrestlers in his day, with more than two dozen championships won by athletes taken under his wing. 80's music fans might remember him from his appearances in many Cyndi Lauper music videos, including "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", "She Bop", "Time After Time" and "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough." As gamers, we of course remember him as the best live-action Mario of all time. That's not saying much when your chief competition is Bob Hoskins, but at least he was Italian. The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! might have only run a grand total of 52 episodes, but that was more than enough to cement Captain Lou's place in gaming history.

Mr. Albano suffered from a heart attack in 2005 and has been in failing health ever since. He was at home with his family under hospice care when he passed away.

Watch: Flaming Lips Freak Out "Conan"

Posted on October 14 2009 at 01:12 PM

The Flaming Lips are back to making great albums and great videos and just generally being one of those ageless and insane bands you love to love.

They brought Embryonic's cataclysmic closer "Watching the Planets" to "The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien" last night and killed it. The performance included nifty little hand stickers, a Yes t-shirt, and some dude obliterating a huge gong throughout the entire song.

Create Your Dragon Age Character Now

Posted on October 13 2009 at 03:52 PM

While BioWare's Dragon Age: Origins isn't out until next month, PC players can get a head start building their avatar with the Dragon Age Character Creator, now available for download.

You might not know where you'll be going, but you'll sure know who you'll be. BioWare has released the entire character creation process for the PC version of Dragon Age: Origins as a free download on the official website. The download is around 370mb or so, and once installed it allows you to completely create your Dragon Age character, save it, and then import it once the full game hits store shelves and digital distribution channels.

I love BioWare for doing this. This is exactly the sort of pre-release application that gets me excited about sinking my time and teeth into an epic RPG. They've got versions in German, French, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Czech, and Hungarian, so not being able to read what I am typing here is no excuse.

Queen guitarist hints at Queen Rock Band coming soon

Queen guitarist hints at Queen Rock Band coming soon screenshot

Now that Beatles Rock Band is out and has proved such a successful concept, we're sure to see many other band-specific versions of the popular game. Like Queen, for example, may be next, if a recent BBC interview with guitarist Brian May has anything to say about it. While praising the new Muse album (which you need to go buy right now because it's stellar), the topic of Queen's appearance in Lego Rock Band came up, and that led to talk of other Queen-centric games.

May mentioned discussion going on behind the scenes in regards to a Queen Rock Band game, and he was quoted as saying: "Yes we're into it, I think it may happen." Who could blame him for being into it -- I am really into the idea of rocking out some Queen Rock Band style myself.

What do you think of the idea of a slew of Rock Band titles focusing on specific bands. Cool? Or milking the franchise?

All right, folks, the day is almost finally upon us. Tuesday marks the release of The Flaming Lips' new, three-years-in-the-making, double album, Embryonic. And, in the typical Lips' fashion, it's going to be quite the spectacle.

A distinct few of the legion of Lips-obsessed will be able to take their new-album happiness to the next level come Wednesday. The band will play a one-off show at the Nike/Ricardo Montalblan Theater in Hollywood, and it'll be the band's last show until 2010. Tickets will be available at L.A.'s famous Amoeba Records with the purchase of Embryonic, as well as through KCRW 89.9 FM and LA Weekly. The show is first-come, first-serve, and as doors open at 6:30, expect people to be camped out hours earlier.

Good luck, Los Angelites.

Dragon Age: Origins trailer

Posted on October 12 2009 at 10:41 PM

Ready for some real hotness? Check out this ridiculously over-the-top launch trailer for Dragon Age: Origins, with cinematic action so good that the actually videogame itself won't even dream of living up to it. It's got a dragon in it, as well as a sexy sorceress that turns into a spider. What more do you need?

Origins is out next month and I seriously cannot wait. Having played quite a bit of the game already, I can confirm that it's an excellent RPG that may very well give Demon's Souls a run for its money as my RPG of the year. Good times ahead for roleplaying fans. Very good times indeed.

Peter Hook calls Morrissey a 'twat'

Posted on October 12 2009 at 10:34 PM

Peter Hook spoke out this week (October 3) about the last days of his former band New Order, claiming that a lack of communication had left the band "an empty shell". Speaking as part of BBC Radio 2's New Order week, the bass player spoke about how relations between himself and frontman Bernard Sumner had broken down.
Former Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook has labelled fellow Mancunian Morrissey a "twat" after admitting there was an intense rivalry between his bands and The Smiths during the '80s.

Speaking at a Q&A session on Saturday (October 10) at Bristol Borders, where he was promoting his first book 'The Haรงienda: How Not To Run A Club', Hook said he was never a fan of his rivals.

"There's no way I could have liked The Smiths as they were our competition," he declared, "Morrissey's a twat anyway! He makes Mark E Smith look popular! He really does."

He went on to joke about his rival's approach to legal issues.

He said: "What I do love about Mozzer though, is that any time anyone has any legal problem with him, the only person you can speak to about [it] is his mother! That's true. So if you have a problem you have to deal with Morrissey's mother. And the first thing she says is, "Our Steven wouldn't do that!""

Since the acrimonious break-up of New Order in 2007, Hook has been working on his new project, Freebass, with Stone Roses/Primal Scream bassist Mani, and Morrissey's former bandmate Andy Rourke. After rumours that Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke and Liam Gallagher would front the band, he revealed that they have found a permanent singer in Gary Briggs, formerly of indie band Haven.

When asked how this came about, he said that after a futile "indie 'X Factor'" style search, Mani suggested that they enlist the help of some famous friends.

"He said 'We know everyone don't we? Liam, Kele, Tim Burgess - let's ask them'. So we asked a lot of people, and to be honest, I'm a bit busy, so most of them are really busy too, and the only three that delivered were Howard Marks - Mr Nice - who's done a fantastic state of the world rap, which is mega. Pete Wiley did a fantastic track for us, Tim Burgess did one, and I sing the other.

"Then Gary appeared, which was a relief so then I didn't have to deal with them other idiots! Going from one difficult lead singer to nine, you know...! Mani said 'Let's get someone who's just starting out and then we can persecute him!' So that's what we're doing, but don't tell him!"

He added that Freebass are planning to release an EP featuring the guest singers, followed by an album with Briggs.

'The Haรงienda: How Not To Run A Club' is out now.

Devin Townsend Album Info

Posted on October 12 2009 at 10:25 PM

The Devin Townsend Project will release Addicted on November 17.

Townsend said of the album: "Musically, Addicted is along the lines of the big, wall of sound hard rock/heavy metal of Ocean Machine and Accelerated Evolution (even Physicist at points). It is a very direct and 'to the point' album with an emphasis on groove and the chorus.

"In the past, lots of my records ended up taking a kind of Pink Floyd-ish route (between song meandering, etc.) Addicted is really simple: 11 rocking songs with no bullshit."

'Hyperdrive!' is a re-recording of the track of the same name on Devin's previous album Ziltoid The Omniscient. The new version will feature vocals by ex-The Gathering singer Anneke van Giersbergen.

Tracklist:

1. Addicted!
2. Universe In A Ball!
3. Bend It Like Bender!
4. Supercrush!
5. Hyperdrive!
6. Resolve!
7. Ih-Ah!
8. The Way Home!
9. Numbered!
10. Awake!

Jarvis Cocker awarded honorary doctorate

Posted on October 12 2009 at 10:24 PM

Jarvis Cocker
is to be awarded an honorary doctorate at Sheffield Hallam University this November.

Sheffield-born Cocker credits the establishment - where Pulp first gave John Peel a demo tape - as being responsible for his career in music and art.

His studies at the then-polytechnic (now part of Sheffield Hallam University) also led to him being offered a place at London's Central St Martin's college in 1988, reports Uncut.co.uk.

"Sheffield Hallam started my career in two ways - firstly as a musician because John Peel 'discovered' us at Sheffield Polytechnic, and then as an artist," Cocker explained.

"If Sheffield Polytechnic hadn't allowed me to study on an access course then I would never have got my place at St Martins [college in London]."

The Flaming Lips: New Album “Embryonic” (Review by Wayne of the Flaming Lips)

Posted on October 12 2009 at 03:41 PM

The Flaming Lips (Foto: Warner Music)

A TRACK-BY-TRACK Review from Wayne Coyne

1) CONVINCED OF THE HEX

The basic track is a first take freak-out jam with Steven on drum kit, Kliph on another drum kit and me (Wayne) on wobbly, distorted bass. The initial recording went on for about 10 minutes. We edited it down to just the section where the groove was best. This was our first successful attempt at merging a low-fi distortion jam with hi-fi computer overdubs. This was the first in a series of lyrics inspired by repeated viewings of the controversial film, "The Night Porter" (made in 1974 by the radical Italian director Liliana Cavani.) Its themes of submission and obsession and cruelty and pleasure really put the zap on my sleep-deprived head.

2) THE SPARROW LOOKS UP AT THE MACHINE

A simple rhythmic mantra about the meaning of the concepts of power and submission and nature vs. technology....but not for defiant reasons.....to be in awe of things that have power....even if it has the power to control you....to mentally get past the fear of being dominated and to embrace the realization of our helplessness.

3) EVIL

An underlying story of regretting not being able to detect and understand evil...being haunted by how kind, gentle creatures are easily overpowered by the violent, mean beings.....humans are capable of such horrible things and create so much suffering in the world.

The Flaming Lips (Foto: Warner Music)

The Flaming Lips (Foto: Warner Music)

4) AQUARIUS SABOTAGE

Another of the early freak-out jams that showed us a new way. We began to name our free-form sessions using astrological signs. We didn't know how many we'd end up with, so this naming system was a solution to keeping track.....but it quickly began to color what the little pieces of music meant. I guess everybody already has an abstract concept in their mind that is evoked by the zodiac stuff.

5) SEE THE LEAVES

A simple, menacing groove, but also a kind of grinding machine.....it implies a primitive self-exploration.....to understand life, we must, sadly, understand death....to know the value of love, we must try to understand the nature of evil....to know ecstasy, one must explore suffering. Crazy, panic drums by Kliph.

6) IF

A quiet response to the song "Evil." It says, "yes....people are evil....it's true." But humans have within them the capacity to do the greatest of kindness....if they decide. Sung by Steven. Done with a little digital recorder sitting on top of the Fender Rhodes.

7) GEMINI SYRINGES

Features Thorsten Wörmann doing sound bites explaining some fundamental mathematical equations involving polynomial rings....but also featuring Karen O making clicking gunshot sounds.

8) YOUR BATS

This song began as a free-form rock jam with Steven on drum kit, Kliph on congas and me, again, on wobbly, simple bass. Lyrics inspired again by themes of digression - accepting human nature as disturbing.

9) POWERLESS

One of our longer guitar solos ever put into a song. Lyrics and mood of waiting in the dark.....scared of what you might find.

10) THE EGO'S LAST STAND

Strange song about standing with my mother watching a small kitten die on her porch...

11) I CAN BE A FROG

A kind of Sonny and Cher back-and-forth love song. Karen O makes joyful animalistic outbursts.

12) SAGITTARIUS SILVER ANNOUNCEMENT

Voice from beyond was added to early spooky jam. Religious choir vocal things by Steven. The lyrics imply that to surrender to our primitive desires and obsessions is the only way to pure freedom

13) WORM MOUNTAIN

A spontaneous, heavy, Lightning Bolt-style jam. MGMT join in with singing and shakers.....freedom to fail.

14) THE IMPULSE

A mellow observer voice tries to remind us to see joy in all situations and to redefine what pleasure is.

15) SCORPIO SWORD

The most free-form of all of the early freak-out jams. Initial recording goes on for about 10 minutes. This is just a piece of that. Michael on bass, Steven on wah Rhodes, Kliph doing exploding drums and me on echo 12-string guitar.

16) SILVER TREMBLING HANDS

At last, the ecstasy of following her more true animalistic urges......the "she" in the song finally gets the ultimate high.

17) VIRGO SELF-ESTEEM BROADCAST

Thorsten Wörmann can be heard giving the final blow that will, at last, destroy our ego and let us begin again!! He says, "you think the forces have control....well, there are no forces and they have no control.....it's just you and me.....and we fear anything that looks like the sun......and we, by our own design, are helpless......this is the beginning....." Kind of a religious mantra that says "destroy all religion."

18) WATCHING THE PLANETS

Tribal conquering dirge. Karen O kicks in singing with me and Steven. A final revelation that celebrates the power of nature and implies that the only laws worth obeying are the laws one makes for oneself. Experience is the only teacher.....

-Wayne

The Flaming Lips - Embryonic

Posted on October 12 2009 at 12:35 PM

Embryonic

The Flaming Lips
Embryonic

[Warner Bros.; 2009]

9.0

Over its seven-year gestation, Christmas on Mars had come to represent everything wonderful and frustrating about the Flaming Lips. As much as we loved the idea of Wayne Coyne producing a sci-fi flick in his backyard with hardware-store materials, the Lips' musical production became less frequent-- and less consistent-- during its making. 2006's scattershot At War With the Mystics tried to cut down on the lightness of their two previous landmark albums but was largely overwhelmed by cloying singles ("The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song", "Free Radicals") that felt like little more than excuses to shoot off their confetti cannons. The trio's desire to produce crowd-pleasing spectacle-- whether on stage or on film-- had seemingly taken priority over their desire to be a band.

But when Christmas on Mars finally surfaced in late 2008, it came with a peace offering to fans longing for a return to the band's bizarro roots: a full-length soundtrack of unsettling instrumentals that conjured the film's icy desolation. Now, rather than close a chapter on this seven-year saga, the Flaming Lips have taken a dramatic left turn with their Mystics follow-up-- the double album Embryonic is the band's most audacious undertaking since 1997's Zaireeka. The sprawling 70-minute marathon ruminates on themes of madness, isolation, and hallucinogenic horror, translating them into an unrelentingly paranoid, static-soaked acid-rock epic. Embryonic actually feels like it was produced in one of Christmas on Mars' hermetic space-station labs, with squelching equipment that takes a few moments to warm up and frequent instructional studio chatter that gives the impression of a subject under observation.

There's a raw directness to Embryonic that's been largely absent from Lips records since the mid-90s. For the first time in years, they've made an album that actually sounds like a band playing live together in a small room. In light of Mystics' overly processed, grab-bag quality, the holistic, audio-vĂŠritĂŠ approach on display here is remarkable-- the record is extremely dense, initially overwhelming, but unusually rewarding upon repeat listens. Like the double-disc, high-concept rock epics of yore (think Physical Graffiti or Bitches Brew), it captures them at their most sprawling and ambitious, boldly pushing themselves towards more adventurous horizons.

Musically, too, Embryonic leans heavily on the Lips' formative 60s/70s psych-rock influence (like In a Priest Driven Ambulance's "Take Meta Mars" before it, Embryonic's formidable opener "Convinced of the Hex" grooves heavily on Can's "Mushroom"), but never before has the band recorded an album so unwaveringly sinister, or so devoid of pop-song levity. (Hell, even Zaireeka had "The Big Ol' Bug Is the New Baby Now".) Wayne Coyne no longer assumes the role of the endearingly creaky, puppet-toting crooner. Instead, he's a world-weary fatalist describing scenes of environmental holocaust in a chillingly unaffected monotone on the rampaging "See the Leaves". Or he's a cult leader deviously summoning his minions on "Sagittarius Silver Announcement", before leading them to a fiery demise on the monstrous, stoner-metal onslaught of "Worm Mountain" (featuring fuzzbox-stomping assistance from MGMT). The atmosphere of dread reaches its fever pitch in the album's spellbinding seven-minute centerpiece "Powerless", where, over top a coolly ominous bass riff, Coyne's nervous verses yield to a Syd Barrett-on-Mandrax guitar freak out.

There are brief respites amid Embryonic's thundering eruptions, but even these carry a calm-before-the-storm unease: On paper, "I Can Be a Frog" reads like another of Coyne's animal-populated nursery rhymes, but the foreboding orchestration and giggly background squawks (courtesy of Karen O) render it too creepy for kindergarten. And the vocoderized lullaby "The Impulse" serves only to make the screaming intro to strobe-lit freakout "Silver Trembling Hands" all the more startling. True to an album named Embryonic, there are tracks that aren't fully formed (namely, the drunken Bonham stumble of "Your Bats" or the free-psych splatter of "Scorpio Swords"), but even in its slighter moments, Embryonic exhibits a renewed sense of fearless freakery for a band who so recently threatened to lapse into stagy routine.

"I wish I could go back, go back in time," Coyne sings on "Evil", Embryonic's most conventionally Lips-ian ballad, but the nostalgic impulse is immediately undercut by the admission that "no one really ever can." Perhaps Coyne is anticipating the confused reactions of recent Lips converts expecting more life-affirming anthems along the lines of "Do You Realize??" or "Race for the Prize". But given the band's history, Embryonic's sea change arrives right on time to herald a new Flaming Lips for a new decade. Back in 1990, In a Priest Driven Ambulance signaled the Lips' transformation from garage-punk misfits into a splendorous, kaleidoscopic rock outfit; 1999's The Soft Bulletin reconfigured them once again into a sophisticated, sincere symphonic-pop troupe bestowed with increasing commercial acclaim and street-naming ceremonies in their honor. We can only hope that, as we enter the 2010s, Embryonic portends yet another new phase for the Flaming Lips-- one that's equally as improbable and rewarding as the ones that have preceded it.

Casablancas: 'New Strokes album will sound like Thin Lizzy and A-Ha'

Posted on October 11 2009 at 02:00 PM

Pic: Pieter M Van Hattem

The New York singer is going it along with solo debut 'Phrazes For The Young', but has assured fans that the band's long-awaited fourth record is not far away.

He told XFM: "I'm looking forward to it. We worked on it for months, we have most of the songs written, more than half of them written. But it's just a question of getting all five dudes in the room. I'm ready to do it. We're supposed to have done it already but it got pushed back."

Quizzed on the nature of the record, Casablancas said it was too early to tell, but that he has his own ideas of how it should sound. "I have my own personal wish that it would sound like Thin Lizzy, but if they could peer into the future and kind of have eighties melodies. Like a super-tight late seventies rock band but with A-Ha moments, if that makes sense."

But he added that he has less control in the band than he might like. "The Strokes is a tough musical jury," he explained, "so if something is going to survive it's got to pretty much please five incredibly picky dudes. That's the great thing about the band but on the other hand sometimes it can be stifling for certain parts."

"You might have a vision for a part but you can't express what you want to look like in its final state. And it's hard to even get to the final state because before it works, people are like 'I don't like it', so it's hard to work an idea through when people are fighting you."

New Modest Mouse Video

Posted on October 09 2009 at 10:27 AM

Here it is: Yet another awesome Modest Mouse video. This one is for "The Whale Song", from the No One's First and You're Next EP.

Director Nando Costa made the six-minute opus with assistance from the Portland production company Bent Image Lab. The effects-crammed video follows what happens after Isaac Brock uses a medieval-looking weaving contraption to conjure images of giant snails, disembowelments, and plants that play the drums. It's an epically weird piece of work, and it could turn out to be Modest Mouse's very own "Black Hole Sun".

Radiohead Album In 2010

Posted on October 09 2009 at 10:17 AM

Despite earlier reports that cited Thom Yorke as stating that the band might be finished with creating albums, Radiohead will indeed record another record in 2010 according to the band's guitarist, Ed O'Brian.

"O'Brien assures the NME that Yorke was "misquoted," promising that the studio sessions Radiohead has booked for this winter will "definitely" lead to a full-length physical album in 2010. Hallelujah! In fact, he goes on at some length about how much he and the other band members love the tangible artwork that comes with vinyl and CDs. Given the gorgeous packaging that has accompanied each of Radiohead's releases for the past decade and a half, I can't say that's a shock.

Is it too early to start speculating about what Radiohead's LP8 might sound like? O'Brien tells the NME that this summer's free single "These Are My Twisted Words" isn't necessarily an indicator, which is too bad since I really love that song. Clearly Radiohead's creative juices are flowing right now, though - just look at all the fantastic new material Yorke played at his recent solo shows. I trust them to come up with something mind-blowing once they get back into the studio."

Gran Turismo 5: Screens of exotics look crazy good

Gran Turismo 5: Screens of exotics look crazy good screenshot

Damn. How great do these screens of Ferrari and Lamborghini cars look? Eye-searingly good, I'd say.

I'm not sure why there's a focus on exotics in the screens released from Sony of Gran Turismo 5. Other car games focus on that sports car that is just out of reach for most, toying with that feeling that you could at least drive your dream car in a game. A Ferrari? You're never getting one of those. And they're in all car games anyway - big deal.

But these screens look fantastic. Honestly, these screens look better than any time I've seen Gran Turismo 5 in person. I'm not trying to call anyone out, though. I'm just saying that I hope the final game looks this good.

Muse ask Fox News presenter Glenn Beck to retract his support for the band – audio

Posted on October 05 2009 at 07:16 PM

Muse have reportedly asked under-fire Fox TV presenter Glenn Beck to retract his public endorsement of the band after he praised them on his radio show.

Listen to the broadcast by scrolling down now.

Beck, who is known for his conservative stance on politics, is currently embroiled in a scandal over remarks he made in July when he called President Obama "a racist". The Press Association today (October 5) reports that Waitrose has pulled its advertisements on Fox News over the incident.

Speaking on 'The Glenn Beck Program' on September 16, the presenter hailed Muse's latest album 'The Resistance' as "fantastic", before stating that the band themselves are known to share his libertarian views concerning how the western world is governed.

"These guys are brilliant, they know the time that we live in. They are libertarians from England," he said. "All of the lyrics are just dead on, on what's coming our way."

Beck also endorsed the band on his Twitter page the same day, again alluding that they are libertarians.

"New Muse CD. Amazing. These guys are right on the money. Lyrics on target, talent off the charts. They 'get it'. Libertarian!" he Tweeted.

However, speaking later on his radio show, Beck revealed he had been asked to retract his praise for the band after being emailed by a Muse representative while on air.

"I just got an email from representation of Muse," he said. "They would like me to retract my endorsement. My apologies to Muse for saying that I like them. I didn't mean to destroy all their credibility and all their coolness.

"Let me just set the record straight. Muse - I hate them. It's an awful album and you should never go out and buy it."

Radiohead's Thom Yorke's new band to make live debut early

Posted on October 02 2009 at 10:05 AM

Thom Yorke has announced his new solo band will make their live debut earlier than expected - tonight (October 2) in fact.

The group, which includes Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, were due to play their first show on Sunday (October 4).

However writing on the Dead Air Space blog, the Radiohead singer has decided to kick things off early.

"So yes, that band that doesn't really have a name that I'm working with at the moment have decided to do a warm-up show," he explained.

The gig will take place at Los Angeles' Echoplex, though Yorke warned, "It's not that big, it'll be total chaos and its kind of a rehearsal but .. if you are near by..."

Tickets are available from Ticketweb.com

Jarvis Cocker set to release limited-edition single

Posted on October 01 2009 at 07:22 PM

Jarvis Cocker has announced plans to release a strictly limited seven-inch single next month.

The former Pulp singer has lined up a 1,000 copies of the double A-sided record, which features the the title track from his 2009 LP 'Further Complications' and album track 'Girls Like It Too'.

To mark the release, which is due out on November 9, Cocker will be staging a residency at London's Village Underground in Shoreditch, similar to his Galerie Chappe Paris show earlier this year where the singer soundtracked yoga and pilates classes.

The singer has also contributed a new song to 'The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou' director Wes Anderson's new movie 'The Fantastic Mr Fox' and is set to appear in the film as a puppet.

Meanwhile, Cocker is currently making podcasts of himself reading short stories from his official website www.jarviscocker.net.
